The Lung Associations' International
Centre for Air Quality and Health

A Partnership of the Lung Associations
in Eastern Canada and New England

The Centre is an action-oriented, non-governmental organization of the Lung Associations in New England and Eastern Canada , including Quebec , which is designed to develop public support for effective legislative initiatives aimed at reducing air emissions. It represents 23 million people in the six New England States and five eastern Canadian Provinces . It is well known that various airborne pollutants such as ozone, particulate matter, acid aerosols, and heavy metals from industrial, transportation and power-generating sources have significant health and environmental impacts on the Northeastern United States and Eastern Canada . Many scientific studies have linked air pollutants with serious health effects ranging from the exacerbation of asthma and chronic bronchitis to mortality from respiratory or cardiovascular failure. It is estimated that thousands of people in the region die each year and millions are affected with more moderate, but still important, health effects.

Vision of the Centre

That all people in New England and Eastern Canada will have healthy air to breathe.

Mission of the Centre

To promote actions that result in timely and significant reductions in air pollutants that affect human health in the New England and Eastern Canadian airshed.

Actions of the Centre

  • advance public knowledge and awareness
  • support public action that leads to legislative changes, and personal, industrial and corporate commitment
  • gather, assesses, and makes accessible information on air quality and health
